IMPACT California Social Studies
Primary designer responsible for the development of this suite of covers for California IMPACT© Social Studies. This project involved the development of multiple concepts, refining the design direction, and iterating on a visual solution that works as a system for grades 6 through 12.
National Social Studies
My personal responsibilities were as lead designer on this project, which included scheduling, design work, collaborating with content writers, managing illustrators for tech art, working with photo researchers and writing image specs.
Design Goal
A two-page lesson opener spread for each topic in World and US History that is both unique and also follows the design of the program. These openers must spark engagement. |

Documenting the Design Process
Sketching and Manuscript Pour
The first step involves receiving the first round of manuscript for each lesson opener. Manuscript includes main body copy, headers, suggested images, and other data and content that needs visualized. Design and Revise Once manuscript is received, I begin with a quick wireframe of potential layouts based on the general amount of content. I suggest adding or removing text, combining content, consolidating headers, and re-working data different into various charts, graphics, or other infographic solutions. The manuscript and layout go through multiple rounds of review, and as text and images are added, refined, and finalized, we reach a final, approved design with hi-res content. Responsive eBook When the design is finalized, we convert our design into an eBook opener. Because of the non-linear design of a two-page collage, the eBook often has slight variations in visuals while using the same content and treatment. We consult with our academic writers and content matter experts to ensure a clear understanding for the student learner. |
